O'Brien in chapter three is trying to mould Winston's mind. He becomes Winston's torturer, teacher, friend and confidant. This is how he re-educates Winston. O'Brien has kept Winston alive because Winston has an intellect similar to his. O'Brien just thinks Winston's intellect is "misguided". O'Brien enjoys the discourse he has with Winston. He finds it a challenge to re-shape Winston's mind, like playing a game of chess.

Thank you sooo much, this helped A LOT!!
