What are Winston's abilities and his occupation?

Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth "rectifying" news that Big Brother might have been inaccurate about. Winston would change or destroy old evidence that ran contrary to what Big Brother or the Party had stated. Winston is very good at logical detailed work. Winston just had to make sure he did not prove too good at his job: the Party did not want anyone defining themselves by their occupation.
