This is one of my favourite novels so really I could go on forever. I'll try to restrict myself here.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!- This is probably the most famous quote in the book. The term "Big Brother" has become part of the English lexicon. In the novel it means that the Party is always watching. There is nothing a person can do or say or even think that will go undetected.

"Syme's zeal and zest are readily apparent to Winston. Winston looks at Syme and thinks that he is a "dead man"."- Winston is looking at Syme's animated explanation of the destruction of the English language. He is much too excited about his job. The party does not like this. As soon as one derives personal pleasure from anything is when they get "unpersoned".

" The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in."- The two minutes of hate is absurd. People scream at an old man on a screen (Goldstein) who turns into a goat. Yet, as the crowd shouts Winston could not help but join. It is a perfect example of mob psychology.

I'll stop now or this will never end!

thx aslan. You are seriously the best on this website.
