Then discuss what effect Orwell was trying to create by representing the old man’s speech in slang and dialect. Are the old man’s words as effective in standard English?

Select two or three sentences spoken by the old man in the pub. Copy them and translate them into standard English.

The old man's language and dialect are things of the past. The old man speaks in a dialect most attributed to the lower class in England. He uses words the bartender doesn't understand because they're no longer used. When speaking to Winston, he does the same. He cannot answer most of Winston's questions simply because he's too old..... he's forgotten. His speech, however, has stayed the same, as has his vocabulary..... a vocabulary of outdated words that most no longer understand.
