The biggest theme that is seen early, when one looks at Winston's behavior, is that Winston is controlled by the "party" - Big Brother is the overarching control of the world so that is certainly one theme.

Another theme could be the the way in which one is psychologically controlled when the government has control of every minute of a person's life. They use language and the way in which they control the media to control the people.
