Well, it is ironic that they have been watched all this time in their little "love oasis". The glass globe with the ancient shell is shattered as the police men storm the room. The symbolism of the junk shop owner in 1984 is that he represents the intellectual and sophisticated past, before the Party came to power. Mr. Charrington is in fact not that old and sophisticated in the way Winston once thought; he is in fact the thought police.
