The history of Airstrip One has been altered to reflect the ideology of the party. As "old" history is destroyed, new books and documents are created to support the party's version of what happens. Eventually the old people who remember the true events of history will die off and all people will know is what the party tells them what happened, "He who controls the past controls the future."
