The proles loved the lottery and paid close attention because the lottery was their chance to win prizes weekly. It made them happy and gave them hope in a life of drudgery. Unfortunately, many of the prizes didn't really exist, and the winners weren't real people. The few real people to wim the lottery generally received very small prizes.
