How do you explain Winston’s “peculiar reverence” for O’Brien? (Part 3)

Even though O’Brien deceives, betrays, tortures, and brainwashes him, Winston does not hate O’Brien but sees him as a friend. How do you explain Winston’s “peculiar reverence” for O’Brien?

People held in captivity are often n made to feel grateful by their captives. Winston has experienced unbelievable torture, and O'Brien is always the one to stop it..... the one who makes sure he gets enough comfort and rest in between sessions. He depends on O'Brien for his survival. This is also known as Stockholm Syndrome.
