#1 O'Brien is instructing the awe struck Winston and Julia that they must read Goldstein's book if they are to join the brotherhood. There is no turning back for these two. They have reached for an idea called hope which O'Brien has dangled in front of them. Unfortunately hope, like Goldstein's book, is merely an illusion.
#2 The emotional mind follows no mathematical laws. Clarity of the mind is a very subjective concept, it can not be measured.
