The setting of course is a dystopia in 1984 (the novel was published in 1949). This dystopia is bleak. It consists of greyness, and a habitual depression among the people. When triggered by the party (2 minutes of hate for example) people can work themselves into a manic orgasm of hatred. This surreal dystopia works to lend the same tone and thematic weight throughout the book. By timeline do you mean the story's timeline or when Orwell published the book?
