Describe the event that prompted Winston’s mother’s disappearance

Winston's mother was originally killed during a political purge nearly thirty years ago. For whatever reason Winston feels responsible for her death and actually dreams about her and his sister drowning. Obviously he feels a certain sorrowfulness for her death; this emotion would not be possible any more.
