The theme of absolute power for its own sake comes to mind. Macbeth ends up just wanting to be King. He doesn't care that it costs him family, friends, and ultimately his life. In 1984, O'Brien explains that all the party is interested in is power. They do not care about ideology or even Big Brother. They want power forever.
