Winston dreams about his last few moments with his mother. He sees her face, and he sees the way she looked after her father left them. He envisions the betrayal in her eyes, and he dreams of how hard it was when they were left alone to struggle. Winston feels the guilt of stealing the chocolate in their last moments together. Winston remembers what a "ghastly" child he was. These memories are painful but at least they allow him to feel real emotion.
