Compare and contrast Julia and Winston. How does each rebel against the Party, and are these rebellions at all effective?
Does anyone know the answer to this question?
Julia enters into the affair with Winston because she is "hot." She is interested in the physical intimacy, or as Winston puts it, she is "only a rebel from the waist downward." She has had numerous physical encounters, just because of her lust. Seems the Junior Anti-Sex League's training is not working.
Winston enters into the affair because the Party forbids it. Their first act is "an act of rebellion" for him, not an act of love or even of lust. He does fall in love with her eventually, but at first he just wants to thumb his nose at Big Brother.
Neither rebellion is effective. Both Winston and Julia are tortured into betraying one another. After that, neither feels the love that they vowed never to release. They once believed they could "keep their inner heart inviolate," but both fail. The Party defeats them as it defeats every individual.
