HI YALL!!!
i have to do a visual aid on the themes of 1984...so does anyone know what the themes are?
To examine themes, think about the book and ask, what is this book really about? Answer this in abstract nouns: this book is about control, rebellion, power, . . . .
Control: in order to control others, we control the things they value (privacy, free choice, honesty, family, etc.) and the things they enjoy (food, status and money, sleep, sex, leisure time, etc.) The Party systematically limits every one of these things. Outer Party members get a limited amount of low-quality Victory chocolate; this way, even a small serving of real chocolate sets Inner Party members above the rest. Contrast Winston's apartment with O'Brien's and you'll see many other examples of this.
Another theme is the notion that Knowledge is Power. Proles and OP members are denied the knowledge they need to understand what the Innper Party is doing. They aren't allowed to read about the past, travel to other countries, or even to read yesterday's newspaper to verify today's "facts." Hence, without knowledge, no one has power.
I hope this helps.
