Winston a hero?
We would like to consider Winston Smith a hero, but sadly he is not. At the end of the story he weeps with joy because he finally loves Big Brother. Like everyone else, he is defeated by the Party. This is precisely what Orwell intends. The end of the novel disappoints and even enrages readers . . . and hopefully moves them to take action to prevent Oceania from becoming a reality.
