"the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." What is the difference among the three? And if there is none, then why dont they just ask the witness to be truthful?

The "truth" can have bias as well as error. The 9th Juror, for example, calls into question the eyewitness testimony of the woman living across the street, as she wore glasses but chose not to wear them in court, calling into question whether or not she would have been wearing them in bed, when she saw the murder through her window.
