In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, many African Americans left South Carolina -and the entire South- to live in cities in the North and Midwest. This table lists some reasons for their move.

Many African Americans headed to northern cities because of economic opportunites. Segregation and a lack of opportunity were a major cause of the Great Migration, and the north had an abundance of opening for industrial workers, especially during WWI.
